Background of the Study
Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory systems are designed to reduce inventory levels, minimize storage costs, and increase operational efficiency by ensuring that materials are available for production just when they are needed. JIT has become a widely adopted strategy in industries that rely on continuous production, such as cement manufacturing. Dangote Cement Plc, one of the leading cement producers in Nigeria, has implemented JIT systems to optimize its inventory management and enhance operational efficiency (Ogunyemi & Bello, 2024).
In Zamfara State, Dangote Cement Plc operates a large-scale cement plant that requires a continuous flow of raw materials and semi-finished products. The application of JIT allows the company to reduce excess inventory, minimize waste, and reduce holding costs, which in turn can lead to improved profitability. However, the effectiveness of JIT systems in cement production can be influenced by factors such as supply chain disruptions, production delays, and unpredictable demand. This study will assess the effectiveness of Dangote Cement Plc’s JIT system in managing inventory and its contribution to operational efficiency.
Statement of the Problem
Although Dangote Cement Plc has implemented a Just-In-Time (JIT) inventory system, challenges such as fluctuating demand, transportation delays, and unreliable supply chains can hinder its effectiveness in achieving optimal inventory levels. In Zamfara State, these challenges may result in either inventory shortages or excess stock, which can disrupt production schedules and lead to higher operational costs. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of the JIT system in Dangote Cement Plc, Zamfara State, and identify areas for improvement.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of the JIT inventory system in optimizing inventory levels and reducing operational costs at Dangote Cement Plc, Zamfara State.
2. To identify the challenges that affect the implementation of JIT inventory systems in Dangote Cement Plc, Zamfara State.
3. To recommend strategies for improving the JIT inventory system at Dangote Cement Plc, Zamfara State.
Research Questions
1. How effective is the JIT inventory system in optimizing inventory levels at Dangote Cement Plc, Zamfara State?
2. What challenges hinder the effective implementation of the JIT inventory system at Dangote Cement Plc, Zamfara State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of the JIT inventory system at Dangote Cement Plc, Zamfara State?
Research Hypotheses
1. The JIT inventory system does not significantly optimize inventory levels at Dangote Cement Plc, Zamfara State.
2. Challenges related to JIT inventory system implementation do not significantly affect operational efficiency at Dangote Cement Plc.
3. Strategies to improve the JIT inventory system do not significantly enhance operational efficiency at Dangote Cement Plc.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on evaluating the effectiveness of the JIT inventory system at Dangote Cement Plc, Zamfara State. Data will be gathered through interviews with supply chain managers, surveys with employees, and analysis of operational data. Limitations include access to internal data on inventory performance and potential biases in survey responses.
Definitions of Terms
